SEO can be frustrating

Search Engine Optimisation is a form of online marketing, and is the process of making a site and its content highly relevant for both search engines and users. Successful search marketing aids a site in getting a high position for relevant key words and phrases.

The biggest mistake in SEO is working on quantity not quality. Its a common thought that if you have hundreds of backlinks that you will have an amazingly popular website. This is, however,  not necessarily true. You are much better off having fewer links which are higher quality.

Another misconception is that its bad to build links with websites which have little or no PageRank. If you think about it, if it is a good site, it will gain PageRank in the future, so it becomes more and more valuable over time. It’s also much easier to link build with other smaller websites.

There are a few key points to optimising a site well

1. Carefully selected keywords
2. Natural high quality content
3. Clear navigation with lots of internal linking.

Looking at sites which rank highly for the keyword you are trying to optimise for is always a good start when choosing your keywords. When I come to optimise a site, I always take a peek at the competition. There are also plenty of tools on the internet that allow you to generate lists of keywords based on the content of a website, the first one I always go to is the Google AdWordsKeyword Tool.
